この「アパタイト」という名前はギリシア語の「騙す・策略」を意味する言葉が由来となっています。アパタイトは様々な色や結晶構成で産出されるので、アクアマリンやフローライト、トルマリンなど、色んな石と間違われたためにこの名が付いたといわれています。含有元素によって無色・ピンク・赤・黄・緑・青・紫など様々な色があります。
