The name derives from the Latin "sapphirus" and Greek "sappheiros," both meaning "blue." It is also called sapphire or blue jade.
It is a crystalline form of aluminum oxide with a Mohs hardness of 9, second only to diamond.
It contains various inclusions. This piece has character and exhibits fluorescence.
