サファイアに限らず、宝石はインクルージョンと呼ばれる内包物によってその色や個性が決まりますが、スターサファイアのスター効果もこのインクルージョンによって生まれます。針状のインクルージョンが含まれているサファイアに、カボションカットなどの特別なカットを施すことで稀にスター効果が浮かび上がります。これは必ずしも針状のインクルージョンが含まれていれば起こるというわけではなく、含まれる量や角度によって変わるためスターサファイアはとても希少性のある宝石として珍重されています。
特大サイズのスターサファイア、少し確認しにくいですがダブルスターです。これだけの大きさがあるとスターアステリズム効果の六条線も長め。もう一方のスターはメインのスターの脇に朧げながら出ます。また、蛍光反応も強烈です！

Not only sapphires, but all gemstones derive their color and character from inclusions. The star effect in star sapphires also originates from these inclusions. When sapphires containing needle-like inclusions undergo special cuts like cabochon, the star effect occasionally emerges. This effect doesn't occur simply because needle-like inclusions are present; it depends on their quantity and angle. Consequently, star sapphires are highly prized as exceptionally rare gems.
This is an oversized star sapphire. It's a bit hard to see, but it's a double star. At this size, the six rays of the asterism effect are notably longer. The secondary star appears faintly beside the main star. Furthermore, its fluorescence reaction is intense!
