スファレライトは硫化亜鉛の一種で、特別な鉱脈はいらず、鉛・亜鉛鉱山から採掘されます。
そのため古くから産出が確認されていましたが、あまり産業用途にも宝飾用途にも注目はされていなかったようです。また、硬度が低く加工が難しいのも特徴の一つです。
定番であるスペイン産はオレンジ〜黄色が非常に多いのですが、こちらのように赤みが強い希少な色合いも存在します。今回のものはサイズも大きめ、かつカボションカットでの「うるツヤ感」も見事です！

Sphalerite is a type of zinc sulfide that doesn't require special veins and is mined from lead-zinc deposits.
Therefore, while its production has been known since ancient times, it seems it wasn't particularly noted for industrial or jewelry applications. Another characteristic is its low hardness, making it difficult to process.
While the standard Spanish variety predominantly features orange to yellow hues, rare reddish shades like this one also exist. This particular specimen is generously sized, and its cabochon cut showcases a truly magnificent lustrous sheen!
