Red spinel is a gemstone that, due to its beautiful red luster, was not distinguished from ruby until the 1700s. A glimpse into this history of confusion can be seen in the fact that the “Black Prince’s Ruby”—which sparkles at the front of the coronation crown held by the British Royal Family—was actually a red spinel.
