この「アパタイト」という名前はギリシア語の「騙す・策略」を意味する言葉が由来となっています。アパタイトは様々な色や結晶構成で産出されるので、アクアマリンやフローライト、トルマリンなど、色んな石と間違われたためにこの名が付いたといわれています。含有元素によって無色・ピンク・赤・黄・緑・青・紫など様々な色があります。

Since apate occurs in a variety of colors and crystal structures, it is said to have been given this name because it was often mistaken for other stones such as aquamarine, fluorite, and tourmaline. Depending on its constituent elements, it can appear in a wide range of colors, including colorless, pink, red, yellow, green, blue, and purple.
