Opal is mined around the world. Among these, Australian opal forms when vast amounts of silicon deposited on the earth's surface thousands of years ago solidified over millions of years.
Formed over mind-bogglingly long periods through slow, low-temperature compression, the opal layer contains little moisture, making it resistant to external atmospheric influences.
